Description

Jake Klein, 50, sets out to make a movie. He hires an actor to play himself and throws a big party. His idea is to shoot the heck out of it and see what he gets. But, everything spins out of control as different, unexpected people show up. Old loves are there. New loves are there. His dead father, his mother when she was young, his kids, his ex-wife. Even his younger selves, Jake at 40, Jake at 30 and Jake at 17, are there, too! And every one of them has tons of advice on how to fix his screwed up life. Jake’s head reels as he staggers through what’s either a mystical experience, a nervous breakdown... or both!

Jake Squared is a great example of just the kind of thoughtful, off-the-beaten-track kind of movie that everybody complains Hollywood doesn’t make anymore. The lead character is an edgy, appealing guy whose mid-life crisis goes into def-con 4 during the course of a single gathering at his home. The story then splinters into several alternate realities which may or may not be simultaneously occurring, a magical realism which the filmmakers handle adeptly. And some satisfying casting choices facilitate the arrival of several interesting actors in small but essential roles throughout the course of the film. Mindless entertainment this is not. Rather a light-hearted yet bracing look at one of those evenings in life where none of the choices seem easy or clear.

Jake in Jake Squared takes a journey that most of us can identify with. These days we live a long time and many of us live many lives; Jake is no different. For each time period in Jake's life, there was a woman. In the film, Jake's age crisis, brings all these women and his earlier selves back, hence the "squared." The film isn't perfect but what is? Gone With the Wind? You'll find people didn't like that film. Regardless of its flaws, Jake Squared is a journey worth taking.

I only walked into the theater because my boyfriend wanted to see the movie but walked out really thrilled that I did. Not only did I have a great time, quick paced and witty but it really spoke to more important issues that couples experience (myself included). Enjoy!

I loved the premise, the acting, the time jumps, the quotes, the self-deprecation, the age spans, the humor, everything!

If you like things like Adaptation by Charlie Kaufman then this is the movie for you. It’s quirky and funny and dark and introspective all at the same time. And if you like Elias Koteas you will LOVE this!

Having dated many jakes, I thought the film was thought provoking and brought back the long standing Peter Pan myth. Interesting.

While very funny, this film is not without it's poignant moments. Pay attention or you will miss some of the richness and complexity of the many layers.

Seldom do I put pen to paper to review a film, but have to as I just saw Jake Squared and have to rave about it’s originality and poignancy…It’s a thinking man’s film, or woman’s, about the quest for love and all the pitfalls that trip us up along the way…Not only thought provoking, but funny as hell! See it, you won’t be disappointed! HH

This film is a little off-beat treasure. Elias Koteas is such a great actor, and he gets to show more of his range here than in anything else I’ve seen him in. The whole cast shines, it was all quite charming. Some of the reviews I’ve seen seem as if they’re by people who watched a different film. A movie that takes chances, is light on its feet, and avoids tired cliches to weave an unusual tale deserves better than the snarky, uninsightful comments one would expect more from a 14 YO boy trolling a band he hates. WATCH IT!
