Description

The year is 2018, and the world has been regrouped politically to a hegemony of six conglomerate cartels. There is total material tranquility: no wars, no poverty, no unrest--and no personal free will and no God. The ingenious way of ventilating human nature's animal-violence residual content is the world sport of rollerball...a combination of Roller Derby, football, basketball and speedway where violent death is part of the entertainment. The long-standing hero of the sport is becoming dangerously popular. He is ordered to retire. He refuses. In this world, you don't refuse...

Everyone loves Rocky but he loses. Jonathon E. leaves the screen a winner. It is a great movie for triumph of will. In other favorites like Braveheart and Gladiator the heroes come up short. People should not always be taught that losing is inevitable. Jonathon E., Rollerball Champion #8 wins mostly for himself and because that is what he has been trained to do!...Loaded with Bach organ music.

A sci-fi film of unsurpasssed relavance to the time it was filmed, (1970's) unlike the lies of change today... What you see is what you get... James Caan does one of his finest performances as Jonathan E...John Houseman also portrays a brazen but scared executive that bites off much more than any executive can chew... Corporations rule but NOT on the RollerBall Track... Check it out... Coarse if your an over educated eliteist you will NOT like it... but if you like a little humor from the 70's with your violence it will prove very entertaining...
  • A poorly done movie

Bad acting, bad directing, bad plot, bad dialog,... this movie has the same quality of a porno without any sex or nudity (but with those bizarre 1970's styles). Science Fiction movies generally ask "what if society was changed in X fashion". In this case it is corporations replacing governments while doing their best impression of communism. Not really that believable, since communism was generally drab (as this movie was) while you would expect a world ran by corporations to be filled with ads and corporate / marketing cheerleading type of speaking. Worse they really don't have any interesting ideas at all about their changed world. Rather they just have an incredibly lame sport they play, apparently just to prove that individuals are all failures? Last and least, there is the love story, with all the emotion and believability of a porno love story. Don't waste your time with this movie unless you are writing a dissertation on crappy films.

Wow this was such an interesting scifi movie to see! it is interesting to see what they would predict about 2018 in 1975. I loved all the references put into this movie!!! SEE IT!

You have to enjoy the 1970s flix for what they were. For example, I'm amazed that people in 2018 coincidentally wear the same type of clothing like they do in the 1970s. You have to enjoy this for what it is, a classic American film.

Not a perfect sci-fi movie but awesome for all that it is. There is much potent commentary here about the nature of man, and what terrible thing go on internally when we try to suppress who we really are. Alot of the story is actually about what a strong pair of forces love and individuality are and how much those forces can damage you if you aren't welcome to express them by society. Perhaps not a perfect vehicle for these topics, but for as a convoluted as sci-fi stories can get, it's very nicely done.
