Marvel’s President Kevin Feige said he regrets having “bleached” The Ancient One in the Doctor Strange movie title.

Marvel Studios previously changed an important detail in the title Doctor Strange when adapting the hit series. They cast Oscar winner Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. Originally in the pages of Marvel Comics, The Ancient One was a Tibetan monk, but in the film she was transformed into a woman of Celtic descent.

At the time, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige supported the decision. Many fans called it “whitewashing” of the character, and others accused Marvel of altering the character to bypass the China Film Administration. a mistake on their part.

“We thought we were going too fast,” the head of Marvel Studios said in an interview with Men’s Health. Keven Feige is currently talking about Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, with star Simu Liu appearing on the cover of the next issue.

It’s worth noting that at the time of Swinton’s casting, director Scott Derrickson revealed that other options for actors of Asian descent to take on the role were considered but ultimately scrapped. The filmmaker previously told Express.co.uk that he almost cast an Asian actress for the role. However, he “feels like it’s falling into the mold of the Dragon Lady – the domineering mystical woman.”

The director also added, “Asian people have been bleached and stereotyped in American cinema for over a century. Everyone should protest or nothing will change. What I did was softer, but it’s still a bad thing.”

Although it’s been almost 5 years since the release of Doctor Strange, it’s clearly still a sore spot for Marvel Studios and even some audiences. It also cannot be ignored that Hollywood studios are eager to bring their titles to China as the country is the largest film distribution market in the world.

It’s also important to note that Swinton’s character died in the 2016 film. Despite appearing in Avengers: Endgame, she’s unlikely to return to the big screen. Even the next Doctor Strange title will not have this character’s appearance.
