Description

At a total cost of more than 3.1 million lives, the Vietnam conflict is, to date, America's longest and most controversial war. It also marked the first time TV journalists ventured out to the frontlines to bring the spectacle of combat into American living rooms. Across the nation, Americans watched, captivated by the surprise Tet Offensive and the slow-motion tragedy of the 77-day Battle of Khe Sanh, and witnessed the courage and skill of American soldiers at decisive engagements such as Ia Drang Valley, Con Thien, and Dak To. Now The History Channel profiles the decision-makers and chronicles key events in the Vietnam War, from the advisors' arrival in 1959 to the airlift from the roof of the American Embassy in 1975. Archival footage and interviews with historians and veterans reveal the military and political strategies in play, and CBS News archives take viewers to the frontlines to witness the daily struggles of American servicemen and women.

I will say this about this documentary... I really did not understand the fighting in Vientam until I saw this video. It has answered my questions in how & why our country was led into a fight that americans were not to fight in the first place for a county that was mostly fighting themselves over government issues that over the years has worked its self out. This video will cover amost everything that went wrong in the Vietnam War. The only winning move the United States made was to bring the Soldiers home back to their families. May GOD Bless everyone who lost a member of their loved ones...

Great footage and compilation of historical overview from the beginning days of the Vietnam War. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this great documentary.
  • Yes Boycott the Command Decision Episode

I stupidly downloaded this one against the advice of the previous review. It was so bad I turned it off in the first 10 minutes. It was like a liberal college professor's bias quiz on war or something CNN would do. Yes insulting to anyone intelligent or even who flunked out of the first quarter of any ROTC course. What garbage. I would demand a refund. I will find the producer of this crap and flame him and his underlings with some email.

This was a seven episode series and I literally could not walk away from the first part with LBJ, the phone calls that were used really proved to me that he did not want to get into this war. As we were growing up, we understood the hopelessness of his situation after the assassination, but to this degree, the first episode really drove that home for me. The entire episode of unsung heroes was equally eye opening. The rest of them was just not enough of a full picture of the war for me. I will keep looking for something a little (a lot) more comprehensive.

The producers should have made the right decision and scrapped this episode before it ever got to filming. Worst 2 bucks I've spent since my first Coca Cola Zero....

LBJ's recorded phone calls make this documentary fascinating. Listening to the president's tone & candor is like eavesdropping on history. I watched this on my iPod during a flight & confess that some of the conversations were a little muddled & could benefit from subtitles. Visually, they did a great job blending actual footage from era, photographs, & reenactments.
  • DO NOT BY THE COMMAND DECISIONS EPISODE!!!

On the Frontlines is an excellent series, but the Command Decisions episode is extremely insulting. Overall, it is just crappy and offensive to the people involved, and the decisions they give you seem lke they were written by some dumb intern from LA. The Frontlines series is a serious and informative look at the subject. I highly recommend it. However, the bubblegum conceptualization in the Command decisions aspect made me want to punch the screen. There are excellent interviews with historians that are edited by a moron so that they lose all context and meaning and make the information support the stupid multiple choice questions they give you. Strangely enough, D: Toss General Westmoreland out of an airplane! Is never given as an option, which would have been a great start to nealry any command decision. Or even E: Punch LBJ in the face for the incompetent executive bungling and handicapping of the American Forces by allowing political lapdog General Westmoreland to run the show. Walter Kronkite's Brave stand on the war will never be equaled in the modern soundbit media where Major TV News personalities are members of the elite wealthy celbrity cult with no real integrity. Watch and learn, and compare the imagery here to the scrubbed and cleaned up imagery they hide from you about the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan. The press is not free, you will not see real news footage like this in this era. It makes you realize how sad our current situation really is for all sides concerned. Peace
