Description

Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

It may have been sad, but it was also kind of beautiful in a way. There’s a good interview on YouTube with Richard Ayoade and Jesse Eisenberg going through the movie. And I personally love Richard Ayoade’s movies and I think that Richard deserves more love for his hard work. Be it the movies/shows he has acted in, the books he wrote, or the things he directs, they are all wonderful.
  • I bailed after 18 minutes

I don't think I've ever bailed on a movie as quickly as this one. It was just this bizarre 1930s version of a future dystopia? Maybe it was taking a while to set up for the so-called "comedy", but I wasn't willing to wait through the setup. I found nothing at all redeeming about this film. It had the feel of a film student's pet conceptual project.

Definitely a hidden gem. I would say if you are a person who reads literary fiction or enjoys modern art, you will appreciate this film. There is a distinct plot line, but the joy is in the atmosphere and depth. If you are a somewhat depressed introvert, you might identify with the main character, but you don't need to be an introvert to like the movie. The art design is so remarkable, they must have labored for hours to arrive at this. It is kind of dark and creepy at time, but in a good way--is not scary or violent. I have not read the Dostoevsky novel this was adapted from, so cannot comment on that. If you MUST have the same old predictable, cookie-cutter thriller or romance to be happy. you will not like this film. I rented this, but felt I had to watch it twice to be sure I absorbed all the details. Well done!!

A unique and very real vision of the near future, textural and awe-inspiring. Jessie nails both roles.

Jesse is great. That being said this is not a comedy. It’s a psychological dramedy. I’ll repeat, IT’S NOT A COMEDY. And it’s certainly not a “smart comedy”. I’m all for good comedies (opposite of adam sandler and seth rogen), and I’m even more for smart movies, as long as they are based on logic. Psychological dramas are not based on logic, because anything goes since each case is different, and anything in them can be given a reason instead of deriving a conclusion from the evidence. It’s impossible to tell if the guy’s having hallucinations, if he’s suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder or if the director was just high throughout the entire shooting and editing of the movie, because the latter certainly seems like the only explanation. Many subjects and ideas can be expressed greatly though movies, but twisting everything only for the sake of making it weird with no logic does not make it a smart project, and it most certainly does not make it a COMEDY. And concerning the “big brother concept”, haven’t we had enough of those already? Seriously?? If you’re gonna go down that dark road at least make it compelling and interesting. That colonel is as interesting as the one from kentucky.
  • Not a Traditional Comedy

I feel like many of the negative reviews come from people who were expecting a very different movie than what they got: the comedy is not really the main point of the movie, so if you are looking for a good laugh, this is likely a movie for a different time. If you're looking for a quirky, dark, thought-provoking movie, look no further. If you're wanting a laugh a minute, save it for later.

boring and not worth the 3.99 rental , i tryied to give it a chance. Its low budget dark everything scene's to the slow pace of events could put any one and everyone to sleep. Dont buy this unless you enjoy bed time stories ..
