Description

Rogers and Clarke (Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman) are two inept songwriters, down on their luck and desperate for money. Taking the advice of their shifty agent, the duo are whisked off on a tour of the mystical republic of Ishtar. On their arrival, our heroes are separately recruited into spying for opposing sides of a planned revolution, while simultaneously vying for the attention of a gorgeous female freedom fighter (Isabelle Adjani). But Clarke and Rogers make worse spies than they do songwriters, and soon they're left stranded in the desert with only a blind camel and several CIA assassins for company.

Not the worst movie of all time by far. Not even the worst movie with Dustin Hoffman or Warren Beatty. Charles Grodin has done worse. It even has better songs than some of the others Paul Williams has written. It is even better than the other Bob Hope/Bing Crosby/Road to...tribute Spies Like Us. It just featured a lot of people who have done many better things than this and got unfairly blasted because of that. It has some really funny bits, goofy songs, and probably should have starred Alan Arkin and Peter Falk ala The In-Laws. Throw everything you ever heard about this movie out the window (along with a chunk of your brain) and prepare for a good old time.

I haven't personally bought this off of iTunes, but I can tell you that, even though I was only born in 2001, the humor of Ishtar was not lost on me. If you take a minute to go in with a fresh mind, not taking all the negative reviews it received back when people didn't understand its greatness, it is wonderful. My father did not expose me to all of the bad reviews until after I watched the movie. I ask you to just give this wonderful movie a try. Go in with an open, non-prejudiced mind, and come out with your own opinion. Thank you.

Could be the worst movie ever made and until offered on iTunes, virtually unobtainable in any form. But take a look behind the screen. Released in 1987 and probably in production years before that, ISHTAR reveals the extent to which fundamentalism and the lust for political power combined to shape events in the Middle East and North Africa. No happy ending to that story then or now. As an added bonus ISHTAR reveals what can go wrong when Hollywood egos and unlimited budgets run amok. Great acting can't save a bad movie, but it's worthwhile to consider how difficult it must be to portray an inept, ordinary guy with mediocre talent. Like BIRTH OF A NATION, ISHTAR tells a story that makes one uncomfortable today, but as an insight into how things were, the movie is worth the pain.

I admit it. I liked this movie. Is it my favorite? Is it a cult classic? Is it underrated? No, no and no. But it's not the worst movie ever made either. Perhaps it's because I'm a songwriter/performer that I can relate to the main characters in this film (Hoffman and Beatty). I've met a number of people who, like them, have far more confidence and ambition than talent - people who are embarrassingly inept at the thing they love most. It's sad really… and I suppose it's their failings that make the first half of this film enjoyable to me - kind of like a car wreck that you can't help but stare at. Anyways, approached with low expectations, this film has a few laughs.
