Description

Steve McQueen stars in this film of Henrik Ibsen's (Hedda Gabbler, A Doll's House) seminal play adapted by one of America's greatest playwrights, Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman, The Crucible), a story as timely today as when it was written--An Enemy of the People. The doctor in a small Norwegian village (McQueen) discovers that the local tannery, which provides most of the town's employment, has polluted the town's water supply. But when he tries to warn the people the doctor learns that truth becomes the first victim of a battle between safety and jobs. Rather than receive the town's gratitude, the doctor is named An Enemy of the People.

At the end of Bullitt Steve McQueen, alone, reflected on a world that was less honest than he hoped when he chose to serve it. It was (and is) a great action movie. When "An Enemy of the People" was released, it seemed so foreign that I passed on it. Thanks for having it available now. This is the next chapter -- standing up isn't without cost. Thank you Ibsen for your observations over 120 years ago which are still true today. And thanks to the late Mr. McQueen
