Description

"Coffee Date" is a fast-paced comedy filled with sexual shenanigans of a misguided kind. Straight-laced Todd (Jonathan Bray) embarks on a blind date with Kelly, but his mundane world is quickly turned inside out when his female date turns out to be a hunk (Wilson Cruz, "Party Monster"). Friends and family - even his mother - not only think he's gay, but help thrust him towards this new romantic endeavor! Surrounded by an excellent supporting cast including comical Jonathan Silverman and Oscar-nominated Sally Kirkland, "Coffee Date" is a refreshing, madcap comedy of errors and the perfect metrosexual date movie.

I know people are saying this is a comedy… But I was completely aggravated with the ending. I kinda wish I never watched it.
  • Better than expected.

I enjoyed this movie, to an extent. I saw where it was going and thought it was a good Idea. Though the plot was semi-predictable the idea was good for an a-typical "gay" movie. There were definately parts of the movie where I laughed. The one that sticks out in my head is when Todd, the straight one, goes out for drinks with Debbie Gibson (my teenage idol, and I have that Electric Youth T-Shirt in my Closet) and the girls from work he has a confessional moment that had me laughing out loud, and I watched this alone. I felt that the Characters in the supporting roles (especially those around Todd) were exceptionally unlikeable and unbelieveable. The Deranged mother who refuses to hear her son's protests that he is actually straight, all the while she's trying to accept him for being gay. The devious brother. And all the people at work who hear "rumor" and then treat it like fact to his face, and again, refuse to hear him when he claims he's straight. All that bothered me. Some things you should be aware of are the Clichets, which I think someone mentioned before, yeah that wasn't a joke or exaggeration. I mean we've heard alot of these jokes before. The first encounter between Todd and Kelly, the gay one, is flooded with stereotypical gay vs straight reactions. They throw them at each other like ping pong. All in all, this movie isn't without its flaws. The opening credits bothered me, not that there was anything particularly scary or unbelievable. It's just that it shows him brushing his teeth and getting ready for work, and sometimes the credits cover up his face... and not in an artful way. Sometimes we'd just see an ear, or a chin or eyebrow. It bothred me. Anyway.. Once the movie started it looked like it had some good intentions but neither the skill nor budget to see them come to fruition. If you can see past it's constraints you may enjoy it. Otherwise you may consider some other movies such as Latter Days, The Broken Hearts Club, All Over The Guy, or Role/ Play... All of which have much better (looking) actors.
  • Lame.

It had potential, but that's the only upside. The characters were stereotypical, the cinematography was terrible, and I had to fight to keep myself awake. It wasn't worth my time or money.

This movie is well worth watching. The plot is very believable as it makes the viewer realize there's more to sex than meets the eye. It keeps you laughing while it also has a message to deliver. Its low-key direction keeps you focused on the storyline and made me, at times, feel as if I were watching a play rather than a movie.
