With the unenviable task of introducing a formerly isolationist American public to the nature of the violence that their fighting men would have to face, "Bataan" was unapologetically without any kind of over-the-top patriotic theme. It is a stark, violent and depressing saga of a small patrol left to a rear-guard action somewhere along the Bataan peninsula on the island of Luzon and a grim reminder of our nation's unpreparedness in those dark, early days of our involvement of World War Two. It is novel in the director's use of silence as a cinematic effect and rare in it's depiction of stark reality based upon reported facts from the war in the Pacific up to that date.

There's a lot of fighting, but the acting is a little cheesy. One dude gets shot out of a tree, as he falls offscreen there is this ridiculously long scream like he fell for twenty miles.
