I’m a big fan of Susan Morgan Cooper‘s films. So I was excited when I learned about the release of Fatal Distraction. And it didn’t disappoint. One of the most important things I learned from this film is that anyone can leave their child accidentally in a hot car and this unfortunate mistake can lead to a child’s death. No parent is above this, and I learned that there are real brain functions that cause parents to forget their children in their cars. I was also overwhelmed by the number of people unfairly judging the actions of new parents, who are otherwise exhausted, overwhelmed, or dealing with new routines. The phrase, “there but for the Grace of God go I”, comes to mind when hearing about another child lost to heat stroke after a parent has accidentally left them in a car. Finally, I am so pleased to know that the “hot cars act” passed in theInfrastructure bill. Until all auto manufacturers place technology that alerts parents of a child in their backseat, parents will need to diligently check to be sure their child hasn’t accidentally been left in the back seat. Watch this film for an up close and personal view of the way our justice system treats parents after an unthinkable accident and how the parents are struggling to survive afterwards.
