Description

In this riveting sci-fi thriller from executive producer Roland Emmerich, Earth has been decimated by climate change, pandemics, and war. Years after the ruling elite escaped to another planet, a mission was launched to find out if a return to an uninhabitable Earth were possible. That mission was lost. Now, a lone astronaut in search of answers struggles to survive the hostile planet, and she must ultimately make a choice that will seal the fate of the wasteland's remaining populace.

  • Not a typical Hollywood action sci-fi

This is not a bad film if you are in the right mood. It's definitely a much more subdued, reserved and sensitive take on this subject matter. Hardly anyone gets killed. People don't die graphic horrible deaths and there's not a tremendous amout of exposition or complexity in the storyline. Still it does raise and discuss some interesting ideas. If the essence of drama is conflict, there's not a lot of drama here, and the tone is somewhat wavering and inconclusive. But if you appreciate the style of Denis Villeneuve and are willing to accept a more junior effort, it's certainly worth a few hours of your time. Nora Arneseder is underutilized here, but still quite good and compelling along with the rest of the supporting cast. The script is mostly where this expedition fails.

I regret purchasing this. The film begins with no introduction, nor explanation. Okay, I get it, start with the action. We follow a shaky cam that ruins many of the early scenes, and made it really hard for me to watch. Add in the over the top feminist themes mentioned in another review and you have a terrible film. You have to start with great characters, and then add a great story, with your themes embedded within. This is just heavy handed, and nothing we haven't seen before. Better.
