When Jane (Sally Hawkins) is dumped at the altar she has a breakdown and spirals into a chaotic world, where love (both real and imagined) and family relationships collide with both touching and humorous consequences.

There’s a fascination in seeing a great actress give a bad performance. Sally Hawkins certainly has her moments. How could she not? She’s well matched with David Thewlis. They’re the film’s best scenes. To believably portray a character so unmoored from reality requires that it be anchored to great specificity, not over-the-top, gonzo behavior that’s all over the map. (The kind of thing that critics love.) A better director might have helped.
