Description

In the early 1990s, the animated show Ren & Stimpy broke ratings records and was a touchstone for a generation of fans and artists. Creator John Kricfalusi was celebrated as a visionary, but even though his personality suffused the show, dozens of artists and network executives were just as responsible for the show’s meteoric rise. As Kricfalusi’s worst impulses were let loose at the workplace and new allegations about even more disturbing behavior have surfaced, his reputation now threatens to taint the show forever. With clips recognizable to any Ren & Stimpy fan and interviews with Kricfalusi and his fellow creators whose work has been both elevated and denigrated by their connection to him, this film is a complex look at a show that influenced the history of television, animation, and comedy. More than a celebration, this film forces us to consider the role of media creators and how we reckon with the reality of who they are versus what we see on the screen

  • Good documentary, but I don’t support the backlash this created

I watched this documentary on YouTube. I would not recommend purchasing this documentary. Although it is good, it is also partially the reason why we do not have actual episodes of Ren and Stimpy available for download through iTunes. Yes, it was horrible what John did, but why should all of the other creators of the show have to suffer because of the actions of one individual? So, they should not be able to make money off a show that they played a pivotal part in creating? I’m sorry, but I just cannot support that way of thinking.

Hollywood continues to worship pedophiles and creeps. It's disgusting.

Great Documentary. Learned a lot about the origins of the classic cartoon. The creator of the duo is most certainly a character himself.
  • Phenomenal movie

Had the privilege of seeing this at Sundance and I was blown away. Amazing backstory about one of my favorite shows but also a wild story that I was never totally aware of. Really well done - loved it.

This was a great documentary giving huge amount of insight on the creation and production of one of the most profound 90’s cartoons. The interviews & inside films/ photos on the production make for one entertaining 2 hour film which was very insightful. Highest recommendation for fans of animation. Hope we will get the Ren & Stimpy cartoons again on iTunes, I was broken hearted to see it removed from iTunes.

If you’ve gone out of your way to purchase this movie so you can write a negative review, you’re doing it wrong. I watched interviews with the film makers and researched the content and understand they were able to obtain interviews with John K after the accusations of him arose. I am interested to learn about the show, what it was like working on it and the atmosphere of 90’s cartoon television that was disrupted by the quirky antics of Ren & Stimpy. Based on early reviews and information I’ve obtained prior to watching, it seems the film makers did a good job and their film deserves a chance. I’ll adjust my review accordingly once the film drops this Friday but until then I assume positive intent and you should too. Cancel culture has no place in documentary filmmaking. If these creators have done what I think they have, this film should be an objective approach to storytelling around a groundbreaking show and the people who made it. I’m here for it and want to support the film makers.
