Description

In the early 1970s, one man stood up to the entire New York City police force. Hailed as a hero by many, hated by others, officer Frank Serpico made headlines when he blew the whistle on a culture of bribery and corruption within the department. His one-man crusade for police reform inspired the Al Pacino classic that bears his name, but the real life saga is as gripping as anything Hollywood could dream up. Now, Serpico tells his story in his own words: from his Italian-American roots in Brooklyn to his disillusionment with the NYPD to his riveting account of a dramatic drug bust—and possible set-up—that ended with him being shot in the face. Featuring music by Jack White and interviews with Serpico's associates and admirers—including Luc Sante and John Turturro—this is an inspiring, all-access portrait of a courageous man who refused to betray his ideals.

Frank Serpico is a truly fascinating look at a man who’s trying to emotionally balance who he really is versus who the media made him out to be. The way Serpico tells his story through his own re-enactments is very engaging and different from a lot of documentaries I’ve seen. Coming from the perspective of a former NYPD officer, I feel that this film has a chance at shedding more light on the underlying problem we’ve faced with abuse of power in the last few decades. Serpico’s story is an important one to reflect on because he helps us all to question why such corruption exists in the first place. How Antonino D’Ambrosio chose to direct this narrative was very thought provoking and effective through his documentary.

A documentary that follows Frank Serpico and his journey as an undercover cop in the 60s and early 70s. It is an introspective look at Serpico's fight against police corruption and has interviews with various people involved in Serpico's life. If you liked the 1973 Serpico, starring Al Pacino, then you should definitely check this out to get a more behind the scenes look at what actually happened.

This film provides a fascinating insight into a man whose story is still as relevant as ever. The film is worth watching simply because it allows you to spend time with Serpico himself. My favorite moments of the film occurred when Serpico would re-enact scenes from his past because he was very animated and would change his voice depending on who he was speaking as.
