Official images from Doctor Strange 2 show that the Eye of Agamotto will return in the MCU, but what about when Thanos destroyed it in Infinity War?
Some pictures in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Stephen Strange in possession of the Eye of Agamotto – but how did he recover this mystical artifact when it was destroyed by Thanos? In the MCU, the Eye of Agamotto was created to house the Time Stone. The masters of Mystic Art used the Infinity Stone alongside the Ancient One to identify numerous threats and figure out how to stop them.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange used the Time Stone to look through more than 14 million different timelines to determine when Thanos was defeated. He carefully orchestrated everything, unleashing enough war on Titan to slow down Thanos, stop him for the right amount of time, and even intervene to try to prevent Tony Stark from being killed. The Eye of Agamotto was apparently destroyed by Thanos in that battle but now it has reappeared.
Maybe what Thanos destroyed wasn’t the real thing?
Thanos took the Eye of Agamotto from Doctor Strange because he believed it contained the Time Stone and destroyed it after realizing Doctor Strange’s trick. Still, it’s entirely possible that Thanos took a second fake from Doctor Strange. This will fit the circumstances in some scenes in the final battle of Avengers: Endgame when Doctor Strange still owns that necklace.
What artifacts does the Eye of Agamotto currently contain?
The Time Stone was destroyed in Avengers: Endgame. So, on the official images, we see the eyes are closed and there is no green energy associated with the Time Stone. It is possible that Doctor Strange is currently using the Eye of Agamotto to hold another item of mystical power, perhaps one he has picked up from another dimension.
Marvel may even be aiming for the Eye of Agamotto from the comics, where the artifact grants Strange the ability to see through illusions, perceive other people’s thoughts, reveal the outcome of any situation, and even Explore different dimensions. Doctor Strange’s costume also has a lot in common with his costume in the comics.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated to hit screens on March 25, 2022.
