This movie was wonderful! I happened upon it and am so glad I did. Very unique and wonderfully directed. I had never heard of it, but I watched it twice, and I never do that. The acting was great, and the storyline was involved with surprising twists and turns. The ending is fantastic. You won’t be disappointed.
  • Slow-burn Horror with Shocking Conclusion

It's a shame that this hidden gem isn't discussed more often, but this really isn't a surprise given that a general audience, forget a typical horror movie audience, might not be attracted to a film that requires as much patience and attention to get sucked in as this one does. That being said, if someone is willing to give this film the attention is deserves, they're going to dive in to a chilling nightmare that will linger in their minds long after its over. Lake Mungo, filmed like a traditional documentary, examines the family of teenager, Alice, who has deceased in unusual circumstances and discusses how they experience their grief. Not long after though, strange things begin appearing on video footage implying that maybe Alice is trying to communicate something secretive to them. However, this isn't your usual Found Footage shtick. There is no still-camera shots with doors swinging open or vacuum cleaners leaping out of pools. The film constantly makes the viewer question the footage being shown and the dialogue from the family members. Are these things real? Are these people lying? Does someone have a motive for their actions? The film becomes less a horror film and more like a disturbing case study of a family overcome with the sudden death of a child and how they react to it. That being said, it is a definite slow burn that requires listening to almost every line of dialogue. Even fans that enjoy Paranormal Activity may not get into this. There is some effort required of the viewer to piece together elements of the story and I, unfortunately, don't see this working for a general movie-going audience. I recommend Lake Mungo for someone whose seen quite a bit of horror movies and is tired of typical horror film cliches. Such a viewer will be rewarded with a gripping personal experience and an ending that will shock them deep within. Definitely worth checking out for those interested.

A mysterious and creepy ghost story told as a documentary. Not exactly "horror." No monsters, blood & guts, or cheap scares. Truly spooky. And totally believable. Don't watch it alone after dark.

If you like TV Shows like The Haunted and documentaries then you should LOVE this movie. It reminds me of an extra long episode of one of those shows. This film will NOT be for everybody. People who like a ton of gore will despise this film and if they expect it to be action-packed, well then you may want to skip this one. I sometimes get annoyed with "slow burning" films, but this one really grabbed my attention. It kind of pulls you in with the intent that, when someone dies, how well did you really know them? Honestly, it is more of a upernatural drama than a horror flick

This movie is so good. Had never heard of it but watched it on a friend's recommendation and it was fantastic. Truly horrifying. The reviews that give this one star were definitely not watching the same movie I was. Love horror movies and these days good ones are few and far between, so seeing this was like finding an oasis in an enormous desert.
  • Atmospheric, yet completely boring.

I personally did not like this film, as it did nothing to advance the genre, but the atmosphere was well done and you would swear that the 'actors' were not actors at all, but real people, which is always a plus. The film itself was slow, and artificial, almost as if it was a student film and not a theatrical feature. Not scary, not even creepy, just atmospheric. Watch it only if you have nothing else to do, as there are much better films that deserve your time and money.
  • Really Well-done

If you're looking for gore, look elsewhere. Undoubtedly, the bad reviews on this are from the non-thinking masses. This is a really well-done piece of psychological art. You can get very sucked in to the storyline, and that's the point. The acting is excellent and in context. This movie stayed on my mind long after I finished watching it. Definitely worth the rent or purchase.

I thought this movie would have more violence and blood since it's part of the Horrorfest. Well it didn't. It's creepy in some parts (and one very scary part) but the whole movie is pretty boring. I think the only reason this is rated R is because younger audiences would be too scared after it. There's no blood/gore, violence, language, or sexual content. I'll only recommend watching it if you're looking for a slow-paced thriller.
