Description

Through the eyes, words and songs of its popular music stars of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll examines and unravels Cambodia's tragic past. Combining interviews with surviving musicians and never-before-seen archival material and rare songs, the film tracks the winding course of Cambodian music as it morphs into a unique style of rock and roll. A vibrant musical culture that was nearly lost forever under the brutal Khmer Rouge regime is revived and celebrated.

I love documentaries and rock music, but I knew nothing about Cambodian history going into this film (which is one of the main reasons I wanted to watch it—that, and all the stellar reviews its gotten), much less anything about Cambodian music. Now I know something about both (the film does a great job of presenting the history of the Khmer Rouge etc without overwhelming and the music is incredible), and was entertained in the process. Actually more than entertained. It’s a pretty stunning movie on every level. Highly recommended.

Before seeing this documentary I had a minimal understanding of the hardships that Cambodians suffered in response to the Vietnam War. This doc does an amazing job of illustrating how music and other arts were such an important aspect to the Cambodian culture in the late 50s-60s. And, how unrest caused by changes in leadership in the late 70s, led to Civil War and isolation from the world. And almost took with it a long history of talented musicians and innocent people caught in a war they never wanted to be apart of. I'd definitely recommend for the music history lesson (music is incredible) and the chance to gain perspective on this amazing culture.
